By converting an image format from PDF to DWG, you can easily increase the size of a drawing or picture. You can then edit and copy individual elements.

There are two types of PDF files: raster and vector. A raster PDF is an image made of thousands or millions of pinpoints of color information, called pixels or dots.  A vector PDF, on the other hand, uses math to draw shapes using points, lines and curves.  You can import a vector PDF into a CAD program, but if you have a raster PDF you will need to redraw it by tracing over the lines.

There are two types of raster PDF to DWG conversion for engineering and architectural drawings: manual vectorization and auto-vectorization. Manual vectorization requires that you make the PDF a background image in your AutoCAD file. You can then manually trace over it. Alternatively, you can use one of many auto-vectorization tools in the market.

Manual vectorization has some advantages. Such conversions are fully editable, multi-layer and are 100% dimensionally accurate (i.e. the length of the lines always match what is written on the drawings).

Auto-vectorization’s main advantage is cost and speed, but there is a sacrifice in terms of quality and features. Layering, for example, is not an option. Most auto-vectorization tools can convert both the raster and vector elements in a PDF file to DWG format, ensuring that you can edit the entire file.
